A positive start to 2021 ended abruptly when the Delta variant of COVID-19 swept over India, killing millions. Since peaking in May, pandemic has abated, and government vaccinated a large share population. The Bharatiya Janata Party continues dominate country’s politics, having centralized power further despite lackluster performance state elections. economy recovered vigorously from its COVID-induced recession 2020, but it is unclear whether growth will return 8–9% annual rates witnessed 2000s. India more bogged down neighborhood than before: been unable retrieve territory lost China last year, fall Afghanistan Taliban threatens an increase terrorism Kashmir. country at crossroads, much depend on how relatively unfettered senior leadership BJP responds these challenges.
